Raph's History Tips - The Tower Bridge Opening

London's Misunderstood Icon

The Tower Bridge is the walk's final destination; the crossing has been a popular landmark for over a century. An easily misunderstood structure (including those living locally) is mistaken as the London Bridge (the second to last structure of the walk). It opened on the 30th of June 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales, who later became the King of England (Kind Edward VIII). An interesting tip about the Tower Bridge and the River Thames was that there used to be 'boat traffic', smaller boats transporting cargo from larger ships and bringing them inland. Today, there is less 'traffic', and it is required to let officials know a day before if the crossing needs to be lifted.
